Protect Your Vision: The Importance of UV Safety

Protect Your Vision: The Importance of UV Safety

July is upon us, and in addition to barbecues, swimming, and fireworks, this month is also recognized as UV Safety Month. As Southaven Primary Eye Care, DeSoto County's premier optometrist, we think it's essential to discuss the importance of protecting your eyes from harmful Ultraviolet (UV) rays.

UV radiation, emitted by the sun, is divided into three types: UVA, UVB, and UVC. Fortunately, our atmosphere's ozone layer absorbs the most dangerous type, UVC. However, UVA and UVB can still reach us and potentially cause significant damage to our eyes and skin. Prolonged exposure to these UV rays can lead to eye conditions such as cataracts, eye cancer, and even temporary blindness due to a sunburn-like condition called photokeratitis.

A report from the American Academy of Ophthalmology reveals that UV rays reflected off sand and water can cause eyes to sunburn, resulting in temporary blindness in just a few hours. Also, long-term exposure to bright sunlight can increase the risk of cataracts and eye growths, including cancer.

In the Mid-South and Memphis region, these threats are more pertinent due to our geographic location and sun exposure. Our love for outdoor activities like fishing, hiking, and golfing expose us to high levels of UV radiation, making it even more critical to ensure we protect our eyes.

So, how do we do that?

Wearing 100% UV-blocking sunglasses is a great start. When buying sunglasses, look for ones that block out 99 to 100% of both UVA and UVB radiation. Don't be fooled by darker lenses, as the darkness doesn't equate to better protection. Instead, pay attention to the UV protection level.

Broad-brimmed hats are another excellent line of defense. They can block about half of UV rays from your eyes and eyelids, where skin cancer often occurs. Ideally, the brim should be wide enough to shade your face, ears, and the back of your neck.

Remember, UV radiation is present not just on sunny days, but also on cloudy or hazy days. Furthermore, UV radiation is stronger in the summer, at higher altitudes, and closer to the equator.

As your trusted eye care provider in DeSoto County, we encourage everyone to make UV protection a standard part of your daily routine, no matter the season or weather condition. Your eyes will thank you.
